Canon Has Mysterious Pixma Printer Locked Down At Canon Expo In New York

Printers are, to be frank, a pretty boring part of tech.

Until HP starts putting webOS on them, us in the tech blog business really don't care much about them.

So, a mysterious new printer from Canon that is being kept under tight security has really baffled the tech community. What's the deal here?

The folks at Canon had the average-looking black printer under glass with a timer. It was dubbed the Pixma printer and alleged, Canon reps were asking folks not to take pictures of the camera.

(In)famous tech blog Gizmodo snagged a picture and posted it on their site. The timer seemed to be counting down to the date when it was unveiled (and was set for six months away), but Canon didn't give any hints as to what so special about the Pixma printer.

Not unexpected, the folks at Canon contacted Gizmodo and asked them to take the picture down. Since they've already pissed off their quota of first-rate electronics manufacturers this year, Gizmodo compiled. But their artist Sam Spratt made the above image which I've included here. For those who didn't see the picture, that's basically how it looked.

What could the Canon Pixma printer be? A new sort of printer, different from ink-jet and laser? Does it not use ink? Why would Canon be so secretive not to allow pictures when it's sitting in the middle of a public expo in the middle of New York City?
